Coronet 86th St – City of Edmonton Involvement

The “bike lane” on 86th street from Davies Rd to Coronet Rd is in extremely poor shape, with several potholes and some bus infrastructure intruding.

Sidewalk is of standard width

Bus stop bench and trash bin halves usable sidewalk width, even without any bus patrons.

Issues

Sidewalk is very cracked and heaved
Pathway is often “standard” sidewalk width, not wider “shared path” style
Bus infrastructure intrudes in to pathway
Curb and sidewalk are separated enough to swallow a bike tire (dangerous at speed)
At north end, curb is too low to protect path users from wayward cars
In general, width and obstacles often appear to violate recommendations in Complete Streets Design and Construction Standard (2023) (v05) (Pg 51, 60, 76-81, etc)

Sept 4th: Confirmed in correspondence with CoE rep that “part of the contracted rehabilitation work is to create an asphalt shared use path on 86 Street.”

Outcome

The road from ~51st Ave to ~Wagner is scheduled for a complete rebuild, (either late this year or next) which includes the roadway and sidewalks. The new specs will be used for shared-path infrastructure (which is wider than the previous specs)
